NEWS - Africans In India Under Heavy Attack

Africans in India are currently under attack following a candlelight vigil held for a 16-year-old Indian teen who died in an apparent drug overdose.
The attack on Africans in India which has led to the hospitalization of at least four persons with several others injured comes after the Indian police released five Nigerians suspected to have been involved in the Indian teen’s drug overdose which led to her death.
Footage which surfaced online shows Indians assaulting Africans with chairs and other objects including metal trash cans.

Local police revealed that at least 10 Africans sustained various degrees of injuries from the mob attacks.
Most victims of the mob attacks were targeted while they shop in the Ansal Plaza shopping center according to the Hindustan Times.

Speaking on the attacks, a senior police officer, Sujata Singh told AFP: “Rumors were being spread that Africans are behind the youth’s death and racist comments were made on social media. It looks racially motivated.
“Five attackers have been arrested and four others are on the run.”
The senior police officer further revealed that about 300 people were involved in the attacks on Africans in India.
The attack however led to the release of a warning by the Association of African students in India via its Facebook page advising students living in Greater Noida to remain indoors.

The post on the Association’ Facebook page reads: “The Association of African Students in India request All African Students Residing in Greater noida-Uttar pradesh to remain indoor at their home abstain from the lecture of Tuesday 28 march 2017 and be vigilante as per the recent increasing number of attacked which we can not justify the exact figure as we are receiving calls from all angles seeking for police assistance. until the police effectif will be reinforced and tight the security ,mainwhile you can always call the police foreigners help line number is available 24/7 for an emergency on :
We kindly request your cooperation for the safety of all.”
The Indian police authority has however revealed that the release of the five Nigerians in its custody connected to the overdose case came after it failed to establish connections and evidence against them.

NEWS - Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau is not dead – Defence Minister, Mansur Dan-Ali says

Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, says, contrary to previous claims, the Nigerian military has not been able to kill the leader of the Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau. The Minister stated this when he spoke with state house correspondents after a meeting with President Buhari at the villa in Abuja.

“I believe it is just a matter of time. It took America about seven to ten years to get Bin Laden. So. we will get Shekau as soon as possible. The sect’s spiritual headquarters has been ransacked and vandalised. He (Shekau) is on the run. He may be hiding in one of the enclaves of Sambisa Forest which we are dominating. We have opened up the place. We are using the place as a training area.
The Army engineers will open up roads and we shall be patrolling and be ransacking that forest for the whereabouts of Shekau.”he said He added that identifying and arresting Shekau has become difficult because most of the terrorists now wear mask “These insurgents have a way of putting on mask.
There could be so many but we are looking for the real one. They have been using mask to portray Shekau in one incidents or the other to give an impression that he has been killed so that we will relax. But we will not relax, we are on him” he said.

NEWS - Herdsmen are defiling our wives, children, Anambra communities lament

No fewer than 15 communities in Orumba-South Local Government of Anambra State on Tuesday raised the alarm over the menace of herdsmen in their area.
They alleged that herdsmen were defiling their wives and children.
The spokesperson for the communities, Mr Chukwudi Ugochukwu, stated this at Orumba-South Local Government Council secretariat in Umunze during a stakeholders’ meeting of the people of the area.
He added that the herdsmen allowed their cows to graze on farms, thereby destroying people’s livelihoods.
Ugochukwu said some women and girls had been defiled on their way to their farms.
He said no fewer than 20 of such cases had being recorded, adding that he would not go beyond for fear of stigmatising the victims.
He said, “We live along the boundary with Imo State by Arondizuogu. All the farmlands there have been devastated by the herdsmen. Some of our women have been defiled on the farmlands but they refused to talk so that they will not be stigmatised. The entire Umunze is under threat.”

NEWS - Pro, anti-Buhari protesters jam in Abuja

Two opposing groups on Monday demonstrated in Abuja about governance in Nigeria. While one group expressed support for the actions of the Federal Government in the areas of security and anti-corruption campaign,
the other demanded improved quality of life for Nigerians.

The pro-government group came under the banner “#I stand with Buhari.” Some of the group’s placards read,  “I stand with Buhari”; “We are happy with your policies, especially the anti graft war”, “Nigerians are fully with you”, “We believe in President Muhammadu Buhari making Nigeria great again,” among others. Mr Amos Adaka, one of the conveners of the pro-government gathering, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his laudable achievements since assuming office. Adaka said the president had recorded huge milestones in the area of security and anti-corruption and also  doing so much to ensure that the country was on sound footing. He  added that the president could not have reversed what past administrations destroyed within two years of his administration and asked Nigerians to give government more time to correct the anomalies.

The other group, “#I stand with Nigeria” carried  placards that read “We demand the change you promise,” “Where are the recovered monies?’ “Exchange rate madness,” “Emiefele must go,” among others. The anti-government group, led by Mr Ezenwa Nwagwu, said Nigerians should have better deal under Buhari and should be treated fairly. Nwagwu said “Nigerians would no longer fold their arms and watch government.” He added that the era of waiting for Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other civil society groups to fight for the citizenry was over, and urged Nigerians to come out and demand for their rights. He said “our government needs to hear directly from us those things we say in our offices, markets, schools, Churches, Mosques and cabs about how bad things are, not through NLC or TUC.” While the protests lasted at the Unity Fountain in Abuja, the police monitored the situation.
