NEWS ALERT - Rikers Island inmate brutally beats female Corrections Officer

A female Corrections officer was brutally beaten by a Rikers Island inmate, leaving her bruised with two black eyes, according to a report by NY Daily News
Ironically, the beating began when the corrections officer Elizabeth Sturdivant was giving the inmate Jessy Blount a citation for beating up another inmate. The criminal complaint filed against the Blount quoted him as a saying “I’m going to forget you are a female and knock you out,”
Says Sturdivant’s rep:
“Again we have somebody beaten by an inmate and our hands are tied,” said Patrick Ferraioulo, president of the Correction Captains Association, which represents Sturdivant. “It’s only going to get worse. People are afraid to defend themselves.”
The Correction Department has changed its use of force policy following multiple high-profile cases of inmate abuse. The new rules require officers to first use pepper spray and avoid hitting inmates in the face.

IDEAS - As the new deadline for BVN draws near - Important things you should know

By now, most people know about the Bank Verification Number, commonly referred to as BVN. The BVN scheme is the registration of customers in the financial system using biometric technology.

Biometric technology involves the process of recording a person’s unique physical traits - such as their fingerprints and facial features.

This record can then be used to correctly identify the person afterwards. Once a person’s biometrics have been properly captured, the person is given a Bank Verification Number (BVN).

The BVN was introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria to strengthen security within the banking system and reduce fraud the incidence of fraud in the system. Essentially, fraud is reduced because no two person have the same biometric information - each person has his own unique fingerprint or facial features for example. As a result, banks can always check the features of a person doing a transaction to see if those features match the record which they have. In doing this, banks could ensure that they are dealing with the right person.
All bank customers in Nigeria are required to register or enroll for a BVN. To do this, you will need to visit any of your bank’s branches. The Bank Verification Number which is given to a person will apply to that same person for ANY bank in Nigeria; this means that you will have one number which you will use for all banks. So apart from preventing fraud on customers’ accounts, BVN will help the banking system to fish out customers who have been blacklisted by one bank and who run off to another bank.
Because the BVN captures physical features, it is also very helpful for people who cannot read and write, thereby making sure that everyone is included in the financial system.
The Central Bank of Nigeria has given different dates by which different levels of customers must have a BVN. ALL bank customers are however expected to have their BVN by October 2015.
To avoid the long queues, don’t wait till October 31, 2015 to get your BVN
This has been courtesy of Guaranty Trust Bank as part of The Bankers Committee Financial Literacy Public Enlightenment Programme brought to you by The Bankers Committee, comprising all the commercial Banks in Nigeria and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

NEWS ALERT - Buhari Approves N70m For Nigeria’s 55th Independence Anniversary

Lol. This new government sef! President Buhari has approved N70 million for the entire celebration of Nigeria 55th Independence Anniversary which is slated to commence from September 25, 2015.

Disclosing this at a press conference today, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation,  Babachir Lawal, said the Federal government has decided that the independent anniversary would be celebrated low key, that is the reason only N70m was approved to take care of the entire celebration.

Lawal who was represented by the Permanent Secretary on Political Affairs,  Mrs. Ibukun Odusute, explained that the reason for the low key celebration is because the present administration appreciate the economic hardship that Nigeria and indeed the nation is confronted today.
"What the President made clear is that we cannot have Nigerians in pains and unable to do what they are supposed to do by reason of our dwindling resources and then we are spending lavishly on celebrations. That has been his philosophy and principles,  that it would not be fair to spend Nigeria’s money that can be spent in paying salaries to people, making sure that children are comfortable in their various schools,  providing enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the country and we will leave all that and spend large amount of money on celebration. He felt it was not a wise thing to do and we totally agreed with him. So,  the main reason for low key is because of the state of the nation concerning our finances. This year’s celebration is therefore in consonance with the cost-saving policy direction of this administration. The ceremony will commence with the Jummat Prayers on Friday,  September 25, 2015 at 1.30pm, at the National Mosque in Abuja,  the interdenominational thanksgiving service will hold on Sunday,  September 27, 2015 at 4pm, at the National Christian Worship Centre,  while the ceremonial change of Guard will hold at the Presidential Villa at 8.00am and the children’s party will take place at the state house conference centre  on October 3, 2015  at 3pm,” he said
President Buhari will address the nation at 7am on October 1, 2015.
“As we look forward to our independence anniversary with deep and sober reflection,  on how we can work together to return our country to prosperity. Let me seize the opportunity to wish our Muslim brothers and sisters and all Nigerians a happy Salah holiday.”

NEWS ALERT - Okonjo-Iweala appointed Chair-elect of Gavi board, a multilateral Public-Private Partnership on vaccines

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has accepted to serve as Chair of the 28-member Board of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, GAVI, an international public-private partnershipcommitted to saving the lives of children and and protecting people's health by improving access to immunization in developing countries.

Official announcement by Gavi Internationally renowned development economist and former Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed Chair-elect of the Board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. She will take up the position of Chair from January 2016.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala will bring more than 33 years of development and financial expertise to the Gavi Board at a critical period for immunisation in developing countries. Despite record coverage rates, every year around 19 million children are still missing out on a full course of the most basic vaccines. Additionally, more than 20 countries with growing economies are preparing to transition from Gavi support by 2020, meaning they will take on the full cost of their immunisation programmes.

Increased access to immunisation has been a major factor in the 53% fall in child mortality between 1990 and 2015. Gavi currently supports more than 310 immunisation programmes in 73 of the world’s poorest countries and has so far committed US$ 1.2 billion towards helping them to strengthen their health systems. Since 2000, Gavi has supported the immunisation of more than half a billion additional children, leading to seven million future deaths being averted.

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Chair-elect of the Board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance
Over the next five years, Gavi aims to support countries to immunise an additional 300 million children, leading to a further five to six million lives being saved. Vaccine Alliance support will also see a 10-fold increase in the proportion of children in Gavi-supported countries receiving all 11 vaccines recommended by WHO – rising from 5% today to 50% by 2020.

"I am excited to be joining Gavi during this crucial time," said Dr Okonjo-Iweala. "Gavi has a well-earned reputation as one of the leading players in global health, providing services that underpin human and economic development. We must build on this solid foundation to create sustainable programmes that will drive down vaccine-preventable diseases, reach every child and provide them with a sound basis for their futures."

Dr Okonjo-Iweala has twice served as Finance Minister in Nigeria, most recently between 2011 and 2015 with the expanded portfolio of the Coordinating Minister for the Economy. She has also held several key positions at the World Bank, most recently as Managing Director.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala currently serves on the board of the Rockefeller Foundation and ONE, among others. She is chair of African Risk Capacity, and the recipient of numerous honors including honorary doctorate degrees from Yale, University of Pennsylvania and Brown. She was named by Fortune magazine as one of the 50 greatest world leaders 2015, and by Forbes for five consecutive years as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world. In 2014, Dr Okonjo-Iweala was recognised by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala graduated with an A.B. magna cum laude in Economics from Harvard University, and holds a PhD in Regional Economics and Development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala was chosen through a Board-managed competitive international search process.
In taking up the position of Board Chair, Dr Okonjo-Iweala will succeed Dagfinn Høybråten, a former Norwegian Minister of Health and current Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Mr Høybråten, who joined the Board in 2006 as an independent member and was appointed Chair in 2010, has guided Gavi through an unprecedented acceleration of new vaccine introductions in developing countries. Today, more children than ever are being protected against major killers like pneumonia and severe diarrhoea.

The speed of vaccine introductions during Mr Høybråten’s tenure has put Gavi firmly on course to reach its five year target of supporting developing countries to immunise nearly a quarter of a billion additional children between 2011 and 2015.
Mr Høybråten chaired Gavi through successful pledging events in London and Berlin, in 2011 and 2015 respectively, which together secured pledges for childhood immunisation in developing countries totalling almost $12 billion.

As Chair, he also oversaw deliberations that led to key Board decisions on funding for new vaccines including the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine and inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) into the routine immunisation systems of Gavi-supported countries.

"I am proud to have played my part in the unprecedented increase in the number of children in developing countries who have access to vaccines," said Mr Høybråten. "Gavi’s success in improving health and reducing illness and death lies in our ability to work collaboratively on complex immunisation challenges. I wish Dr Okonjo-Iweala every success and I look forward to the next exciting chapter in the Gavi story."
