VIEWPOINTS - Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Zuckerberg wouldn’t have succeeded if they were in Nigeria – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the immediate past governor of Anambra state, says Nigeria has brilliant people, but the terrain is making it difficult for them to thrive.
Obi, who was one of the guests at The Platform, an annual Independence Day programme organised by Covenant Christian Center, Lagos, said were they in Nigeria, Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook, and Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft, would not have succeeded.
He said the society contributed to the phenomenal growths of the entrepreneurs, but the same could not be said of Nigeria.
“You cannot do anything and succeed if you have the kind of leadership that this country has experienced in several years,” he said.
“People are talking about Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, let me tell you the truth, if any of them were here, he won’t succeed. Quote me anywhere. I have gone to the best schools. I went to Oxford, Cambridge, and I can tell you this confidently.
“Have you seen anybody in this country who walked into the bank and was given money based on intellectual capital? They will ask you to bring your grandmother’s house, your father’s old house… A bank gave Bill Gates $1 million. Go and read the history of Microsoft. Steve Jobs and his friend were given $2 million. Who would have given them such kind of money here? Nobody.
“The government will not support you, if you invent anything here, the government will not patronise you, they will prefer to relate with a white man.”
He lamented over the culture of waste in government, explaining how he blocked avenues through which resources were being wasted.
Obi described Anambra as the most financially stable state in Nigeria, saying he left behind $155.4 million when he handed over power on March 17, 2014.
“Anambra remains the most financially-stable state in this country. On 17th of March, 2014, when I left government, I left $155.4 million,” he said.
“I left $60 million and N7 billion in Access bank; I left $55 million and N10 billion in Fidelity Bank; and $ 60 million in Diamond Bank. The total amount I left was $155.4 million.
“If anybody doubts me, call me. I know where the money is. I kept it.”
Obi challenged the youths to speak up and “stop celebrating criminality”.
He asked them to take their country back from “lunatics”, adding that sitting back and doing nothing would not help.
“We are in case where lunatics have taken over the saddle, and we must do something about it,” he said.
“I usually tell people to question their commitment. We vote in people who don’t have any car or house, but six months later they invite us for house warming. They tell us of their new cars. Instead of us to report them to the police, we will be busy dancing.
“Everyone is guilty of this. I have been in a church where a man stole money, and the bishop said wherever he got it from, may it multiply, but the man is a thief, so he should be arrested. It cannot multiply because he is stealing our money.
“Ask your local government what he does with the money he gets, ask questions. If they said they build roads, go and check. Take back your country.”
Obi trended on social media after delivering his speech.

NEWS - 'Don't talk to us from a position of strength/force'- Russia warns U.S after U.S suspends talks with Russia

Russia has warned the United states to stop holding talks with them from 'a position of force' after the US announced that it had ended diplomatic relations with Russia over Russia's continued assistance of Syrian forces in the continual attacks on civilians in Aleppo, Syria.
Relations between the U.S. and Russia has never been this low since the Cold War as Russia also announced on Tuesday it has ended it's cooperation with the U.S. on a 16-year-old program for the disposal of weapons-grade plutonium used to make nuclear bombs.
In the 16 year old agreement, both countries agreed to dispose of 34 tons of plutonium, enough for thousands of nuclear bombs, but now Russia has ended the agreement over what it called Washington's "unfriendly actions" toward Russia.
In a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said:
"The decision we have made is a signal to Washington: attempts at talking to Russia from the position of strength, in a language of sanctions and ultimatums while continuing selective cooperation with our country ... where this cooperation benefits the United States will not succeed."
Konstantin Kosachev, head of Russia's Foreign Affairs Committee, also criticized the U.S's decision to end diplomatic relations with Russia.
"Russia has striven for continuing dialogue with the US on Syria until the last moment, and only our position was keeping the chance to launch a stable peace process alive," he said, according to Russian news agency Sputnik News.

NEWS - ECOWAS court orders FG to pay N15m to former NSA, Sambo Dasuki, for unlawfully arresting him

The Court of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has ruled against the arrest and continued detention of former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, describing it as unlawful and arbitrary.

Delivering judgement today in a suit filed by Dasuki, the court ruled that the further arrest of Dasuki by security agents on November 4th last year after he was granted bail by a court of law, amounts to a mockery of democracy and the rule of law.

Dasuki who is currently being tried for allegedly squandering $2.1 billion arms deal fund during the last administration, had dragged the Federal government before the court to seek redress over his arrest and continued detention despite meeting his bail conditions. The court in its ruling today, ordered the Federal government to pay N15 million to Dasuki as damages

NEWS - "Aregbesola's visit to Fayose is embarrassing, shocking and awful" - APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola's visit to Governor Ayodele Fayose as a slight on the ruling party and contempt for its leadership in the state. Aregbesola was in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday on invitation of Fayose for the 20th Anniversary of Ekiti State. At a public forum broadcast live on the state media, Aregbesola described Fayose as "omoluabi" and a hardworking governor who had turned around the fortunes of Ekiti State in terms of infrastructure.

"Fayose is a reliable person" he was quoted to have said, and that in spite of political differences, he and Fayose shared many things in common and "sooner than later, there will be realignment  of forces".
A statement by the Publicity Secretary of APC, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said that the visit shows the contempt into which the party and its leaders were held by the Osun governor after Fayose had caused severe pains in the lives of APC members, some of whom had been languishing in jail for about two years for the offences they did not commit.
"Aregbesola's visit to Fayose praising him as 'omoluabi' and for the achievements by APC-led government is not alone embarrassing but also awful in the face of sustained attacks on APC members, some of whom are still languishing in jail for about two years over trumped-up charges by Fayose. It is shocking that Aregbesola as a governor and one of the leading lights in APC in the South West and indeed the nation would be visiting Ekiti State without putting the leaders into confidence, more so on a visit to a man who once wished the President dead and had done unbelievable things both in Nigeria and abroad to bring Buhari's government down. Worse still, Aregbesola was praising the man who will stop at nothing to bring APC-led Federal Government down after several years of failed attempts by the progressives to win the presidency of Nigeria."
On the reported 'alignment between the two governors, Mr Olatunbosun said:
"We find it most embarrassing and shocking that one of our leaders would be planning a re-alignment of forces with a governor that has made life a nightmare for our members, the same members that will participate in the said re-alignment that Aregbesola is talking about, without sparing a thought for members held in jail unjustly while other APC members are routinely attacked by Fayose's men on the streets.

NEWS - 'I didn't wanna embarrass Hillary Clinton, i was holding back at debate'- Donald Trump says

Donald Trump has suggested that he did so well at Monday Night's U.S Presidential election debate claiming he held back because he didn't want to embarrass his rival Hillary Clinton.

Speaking to a fired-up crowd in Melbourne on Tuesday, Trump said that he has the momentum for victory after what he said was a strong win in Monday's debate against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

'Clinton is as crooked as they come," Trump said, 'Everything she did turned out bad."
"I was holding back. I didn't want to embarrass her."

"She is the candidate of yesterday, and ours is the campaign and the people of the future," Trump said. "She's an insider, fighting only for her donors and insiders. I'm an outsider fighting for you."

During his speech at the AeroMod International hangar at Orlando Melbourne International Airport, Trump said Clinton was "incompetent as secretary of State."

"Crooked Hillary is going to be worse than Obama, and we can't let it happen," Trump said.

Trump also promised that he would "build the wall" to prevent illegal immigration into the United States from Mexico, and that Mexico would pay for it.

Hearing those remarks, the crowd estimated to be about 8500 chanted: "Build the wall."
