OWERRI—Memories of the Nigeria/Biafra war was yesterday, re-enacted in Owerri, as the Consultant to the Federal Ministry of Defence, Professor Bala Jack Yakubu, displayed some deadly weapons manufactured by Biafran engineers. According to Professor Yakubu, “all the weapons were recovered from the war theatres in parts of the South East and South South States and carefully detonated.” Some of the home- made weapons included the multi-barrel ogbunigwe, anti-personnel land mines, improvised explosive devices, Ojukwu anti-mines (made like vehicle hydraulic jack), and anti-tank mines, for trucks, tanks and armoured personnel carriers. Other weapons displayed at the event included long range rocket launcher, anti aircraft missile, bunker cracker launch system, short range round steel ogbunigwe, Ojukwu air launch weapon system (air drop bomb), Ojukwu mortar, Ojukwu bucket and others. Yakubu lamented that the remnants of the weapons used in the various theatres of war, have sadly continued to kill, or permanently maim unsuspecting citizens. “We are showcasing some of the weapons manufactured by Biafran engineers. They caused a lot of harm during the war and today, innocent people are the casualties of these remnants of war”, Yakubu said. While appealing to Nigerians to report any suspicious objects to the nearest security agencies, Yakubu however warned that people in North Eastern States were likely to experience the same thing, when insurgency is finally crushed. Speaking also, Professor Chinedum Adiele, who represented Shedrack Eneogwe, said that it was shameful that the remnants of these dangerous weapons were still killing and maiming people till today.
At least 58 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town in north-western Syria, a monitoring group says.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that strikes on Khan Sheikhoun by Syrian government or Russian jets had caused many people to choke.
Later, aircraft fired rockets at local clinics treating survivors, medics and activists said.
A Syrian military source denied the government had used any such weapons.
Russia's defence ministry meanwhile insisted it had not carried out any air strikes in the vicinity.
If confirmed, it would be one of the deadliest chemical attacks in Syria's civil war.
What happened?
The warplanes are reported to have attacked Khan Sheikhoun, about 50km (30 miles) south of the city of Idlib, early on Tuesday, when many people were asleep.
Hussein Kayal, a photographer for the pro-opposition Edlib Media Center (EMC), told the Associated Press that he was awoken by the sound of an explosion at about 06:30 (03:30 GMT).
When he reached the scene, there was no smell, he said. He found people lying on the floor, unable to move and with constricted pupils, he added.
Mohammed Rasoul, the head of a charity ambulance service in Idlib, told the BBC that his medics had found people, many of them children, choking in the street.
The Syrian Observatory (SOHR) quoted medics as saying that they had been treating people with symptoms including fainting, vomiting and foaming at the mouth.
An AFP news agency journalist saw a young girl, a woman and two elderly people dead at a hospital, all with foam still visible around their mouths.
The journalist also reported that the same facility was hit by a rocket on Tuesday afternoon, bringing down rubble on top of doctors treating the injured.
The source of the projectile was not clear, but the EMC and the opposition Local Co-ordination Committees network said warplanes had targeted several clinics.
How many victims are there?
The SOHR put the death toll at 58, including 11 children, but Mr Rasoul reported that 67 people had been killed and that 300 were injured.
The pro-opposition Step news agency meanwhile said 100 had died.
The EMC said it had stopped counting the victims because there were so many.
It posted photos showing what appeared to be at least seven dead children in the back of a pick-up truck. There were no visible traumatic injuries on their bodies.
What substance was used?
The SOHR said it was unable to say what exactly was dropped.
However, the EMC and LCC said it was believed to be the nerve agent Sarin, which is highly toxic and considered 20 times as deadly as cyanide.
Sarin inhibits the action of an enzyme, which deactivates signals that cause human nerve cells to fire. This blockage pushes nerves into a continual "on" state. The heart and other muscles - including those involved in breathing - spasm.
Sufficient exposure can lead to death via asphyxiation within minutes.
Sarin is almost impossible to detect because it is a clear, colourless and tasteless liquid that has no odour in its purest form.
Has Sarin been used in Syria before?
The government was accused by Western powers of firing rockets filled with Sarin at several rebel-held suburbs of the capital Damascus in August 2013, killing hundreds of people.
President Bashar al-Assad denied the charge, blaming rebel fighters, but he did subsequently agree to destroy Syria's chemical arsenal.
Despite that, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has continued to document the use of toxic chemicals in attacks in Syria.
In January 2016, it said blood samples taken from the victims of one unspecified attack showed victims had been exposed to Sarin or a Sarin-like substance.
What about other chemical agents?
A joint investigation with the UN concluded in October that government forces had used chlorine as a weapon at least three times between 2014 and 2015.
It also found Islamic State militants had used the blister agent sulphur mustard.
Human Rights Watch also recently accused government helicopters of dropping bombs containing chlorine on rebel-held areas of Aleppo on at least eight occasions between 17 November and 13 December, during the final stages of the battle for the city.
And last week, two suspected chemical attacks were reported in Hama province, in a rebel-held area not far from Khan Sheikhoun.
What has been the reaction to Tuesday's attack?
Idlib province, where the air strikes took place, is almost entirely controlled by a rebel alliance and the al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
The region, home to 900,000 displaced people, is regularly targeted by the government and its ally Russia, as well as the US-led coalition against IS.
There was no immediate comment from the government, but a Syrian military source told Reuters news agency that it "does not and has not" used chemical weapons.
The opposition National Coalition accused the government of being behind what it called a "horrible crime", and called on the UN Security Council to open an immediate investigation and hold the perpetrators accountable.
France, which backs the opposition, agreed that a "particularly serious chemical attack" had taken place and called for an emergency Security Council meeting.
A rare diamond known as the Pink Star has been sold in Hong Kong for more than $71m (£57m), setting a new world record for any gemstone at auction.
The oval-shaped 59.6 carat stone was bought after just five minutes' bidding at Sotheby's, reports said.
It is the largest polished diamond in its class to go under the hammer.
It sold for $83m in Geneva in 2013 but the buyer later defaulted. The record until now was held by the Oppenheimer Blue, which sold for $50m last May.
Bidding for the gem, which was found by De Beers at a mine in Africa in 1999 and cut over a period of two years, began at $56m.
Sotheby's said the buyer was Hong Kong jewellery retailer Chow Tai Fook Jewellery.
Alexander Breckner, head of diamonds at jewellers "77 Diamonds", told the BBC that the stone was exceptional.
"It's the largest pink diamond ever found in the history of humankind. It's an incredible colour to it.
"And the sheer size of the stone already makes it so rare and so beautiful."
Previous records set in stone
May 2016: A large diamond known as the Oppenheimer Blue set a new auction record, reaching a price of $50.6m (£34.7m at the exchange rate then current). The 14.62-carat gem was sold after 20 minutes of phone bidding at Christie's auction house in Geneva. The buyer's identity is unknown.
November 2015: The Blue Moon, a 12.03-carat ring-mounted blue diamond, caught the eye of Hong Kong tycoon Joseph Lau, who paid a record $48.4m (£31.7m) for the cushion-shaped stone. He bought it for his seven-year-old daughter, renaming it the "Blue Moon of Josephine" after her.
May 2015: An unnamed buyer made history after purchasing the Sunrise Ruby, a 25.59-carat "pigeon blood" coloured gemstone, for $30m (£19.1m). At that price, it became the world's most expensive precious stone other than a diamond.
November 2013: The "largest vivid orange diamond in the world", according to Christie's, attracted the highest price paid per carat for any diamond at auction, selling for $35m (£22m), or $2.4m (£1.5m) per carat.
November 2010: The Graff Pink, a 24.78-carat "fancy intense pink" stone described as "one of the greatest diamonds ever discovered", auctioned for $46.2m (£29m). At the time it was believed to be the most expensive gemstone bought at auction and was sold to the well-known British dealer Laurence Graff.

A woman who lives in Delta state, dumped her baby by the roadside after being told by a pastor that the child was possessed by snake spirit. The mother whose name was given as Amara Emeka revealed that she abandoned her child because she did not have the N52,000 requested by the pastor to cast out the demon.
According to the story shared by Sapele Oghenek, a media personality in Delta state, the baby was found in Green Egbedi by Reclamation Road, Sapele, on Sunday morning, around 4:30 a.m.
The child was taken to the police station and later in the day, they traced the mother of the child who informed the police that the reason for her action was because she lacked the funds to pay the pastor to conduct the deliverance that will free her child from the snake spirit.
The pastor who demanded money from the mother to conduct the deliverance is Apostle Paul Andrews of God's Rhema Assembly, and from the look of the church building, it is a mushroom church.
Below is how Sapele is reporting the incident.

The Petroleum Tankers Drivers (PTD ) arm of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers ( NUPENG) says it will commence a nationwide strike on Monday.
NUPENG’s President , Mr Igwe Achese , announced this in a signed communique on Friday in Lagos, at the end of its Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting held at the union ’s secretariat in Yaba.
The communique said the strike would draw the attention of the Federal Government and other stakeholders to some unresolved issues bordering on the welfare of workers , such as bad roads, poor remuneration , insecurity and the alleged excesses of some security agencies .
“ The CWC – in-Session considers inhumane , the refusal of the National Association of Transport Owners ( NARTO ) to commence negotiation with the union for the renewal of the expired Collective Bargaining Agreement ( CBA) on the working conditions of our Tanker Driver members in the PTD branch , after several appeals and even an ultimatum.
“ The CWC -in- Session , therefore , resolves to give full backing to any industrial action the members in this sector might decide to take with effect from Monday , April 3 , 2017 .
“ To avert the pains and discomfort the action might cause , the CWC – in-Session calls on the Federal Government to urgently intervene and apprehend the unfortunate situation , to enable NARTO meet its obligations to tanker drivers ,’’ the communique said .
The communique also called on the National Assembly to urgently pass the Petroleum Industry Bill , in order to tackle all the issues of corruption plaguing the oil sector.
It also called for the commercialisation of the operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ( NNPC ), as well as the turn-around-maintenance for the refineries , to increase local production and reduce the importation of petroleum products .
The communique commended the efforts of the federal government to encourage operators of illegal refineries to be integrated into the establishment of modular refineries .
The union also vowed to resist any attempt to increase the pump price of petrol .
It also commended efforts of the government to shore up the Naira against the Dollar and the decline in the inflationary rate to 17 .5 per cent .
The communique, however , called on government to address the challenges of poverty , unemployment , hunger and the rising cost of goods and services .
It also appealed to government to adopt measures to restructure the economy , as well as address challenges confronting the power sector.
The association commended the federal government’ s determined efforts at eliminating the Boko Haram sect from the Sambisa forest , but called for increased military intelligence gathering to stem the spate of suicide bombings in Maiduguri, Borno .
While commending the efforts of the Police in combating crime , the union also called for increased surveillance to tackle rising cases of kidnappings , rape and other crimes.
Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari is the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Force, NDPSF, and one of the arrowheads in the struggle to redress perceived injustice in the Niger Delta. In this interview with Saturday Vanguard, he asserts that other ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta have climbed on the back of the Ijaw to benefit from the struggles waged by Ijaw groups and person. He also appraised the President Muhammadu Buhari administration and explains his stand on the recent overtures of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to stakeholders in the Niger Delta.
Conflict in the Niger Delta I do not believe that there is conflict between the Niger Delta as a whole and the Nigeria state, but rather, it is between the Ijaw and the Nigerian state. Let us not say it is with the Niger Delta because when Ijaw people fight and die, a lot of these individuals come and claim benefit. When benefits come, they come out, but when Ijaw are fighting and dying, they sit in their houses and call us all sorts of names. We have never gone to their territory to look for their problem, we are in our land and doing what we think is right for ourselves.
If the Urhobo are not concerned by what is happening to their people, they do not have the right to abuse us because we have not gone to Urhobo land to go and disturb them, neither have we gone to Isoko land to disturb them. So when benefits come from these struggles, they should not also poke nose and become meddlesome.
Why we rejected the Federal Government Amnesty For instance, government bribed people with what they call amnesty, some of us who were in the forefront said we would not take amnesty, we would not allow criminality to be attached to our names because we have not committed any crime, we did what was just and we refused to take amnesty. But you see, somebody in Benin, who did nothing and who does not have oil or anything claiming that the Niger Delta amnesty was meant for Ijaw people – which Benin man, Urhobo man or Ogoni man carried gun? Why should they benefit from the suffering of the Ijaw people? They call it Niger Delta struggle; personally, I was in the forefront of these agitations with bullet wounds on my body, I went to prison. I have never had a criminal conviction anywhere. I was well brought up, went to the best schools and I chose the path of my people. I have suffered and have been detained 74 times without conviction so when benefit comes, let these people stay in their respective places and leave the benefits for others. I did not take amnesty, so whatever concerns amnesty does not concern me. No need for Osinbajo to be visiting Ijaw land This jamboree by the vice president is funny. Are they our overlords or are we being colonized that they are coming to visit here and there? Don’t they know what is right? The oil belongs to us; it does not belong to Nigeria. Ijaw oil belongs to us. If Itsekiri say their oil belongs to Nigeria, that is their business and if Urhobo say same of their oil, that is also their business and same applies to others. But we, Ijaw, are saying that Ijaw oil belongs to Ijaw, they should leave our oil alone. God put the oil there for us to develop ourselves, so there is no need for any Yoruba man called Osinbajo to be perambulating Ijaw land. What is he perambulating about for in the Niger Delta? Don’t they know what is right? Okay, in trying to be good neighbours to others and share with them, are they the ones that would decide for us the percentage that we would give to them? Their groundnut, did they share their groundnut or give it to us? Which road was built in Ijaw land with groundnut money or with revenue gotten from cocoa? So the thing is that this jamboree should stop, they know what is right and they should leave what is ours for us because they do not have the right to give it to us. That is the issue at stake and people are not addressing these issues as it should be addressed. So for me, they are only postponing the doomsday, they should do what is right because the oil of Ijaw people belong to them. Appraisal of Buhari-led government Is there anything to appraise in the Buhari led government? What is there to appraise? Can you multiply zero? If you multiply zero, what would it give you? From N200 a dollar during the time of former President Goodluck Jonathan, which was the highest, to a roving price of N450 per dollar to salary not being paid for months in all the states, this is a zero government and there is nothing to appraise. That President left and the people are not allowed to know the reason their president left? That fuel price was increased from N87 per litre when Goodluck left office to N145, what is there to appraise? You can’t multiply zero by zero because if you do, what you get is zero, so this is a zero government. I never said there would be war if Jonathan lost Did anyone hear me say that? If there is nothing in the Niger Delta as they claim, why are they perambulating here? Watch that video where I was quoted to have made such statements properly and tell me where I was quoted to have said so. What I actually said was that if Goodluck win and they attack us, we would fight back, that was the statement we made, else, if there is peace in the region, why the perambulation?
