NEWS - SERAP gives FG 7 day ultimatum to prosecute Patience Jonathan over $15m found in her account

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, a 7 Day ultimatum to prosecute former First lady, Patience Jonathan over $15m found in the accounts of four companies owned by her which is currently under investigation for fraud.

DailyTrust reports that the anti-corruption agency in a letter dated September 13th and signed by its executive director Adetokunbo Mumuni, asked the Minister of Justice to prosecute the former first lady within 7 days of the receipt of its letter, failing which SERAP will institute legal proceedings to compel the discharge of constitutional duty in this matter.” The letter in part reads
“Under article 20 of the convention, this government has an obligation to prosecute intentional illicit enrichment, that is, a significant increase in the assets of a public official that he or she cannot reasonably explain in relation to his or her lawful income. The fact that the $15m found in the four accounts belong to Mrs Jonathan raises serious suspicion or at the very least a prima-facie case of unexplained wealth/illicit enrichment, and imposes an obligation on Mrs Jonathan to explain and justify the source(s) of the $15m. In the event that she is not able to justify, explain or put forth evidence demonstrating the legitimate origin of the $15m, SERAP urges you to take immediate steps to forfeit the asset under appropriate legal proceedings, and to institute criminal prosecution for unexplained wealth in the matter. Similarly, section 44 of the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Act criminalises unexplained or illicit wealth and allows criminal penalties and forfeiture if in the course of an investigation there are reasonable grounds to believe that a corruption offence has been committed, that is, the failure to explain the origin of the $15m given present or past emoluments, and other relevant circumstances. Mrs Jonathan has admitted that the four accounts belong to her and that she is the sole signatory to these accounts. The four accounts in which Mrs Jonathan’s $15m was lodged are said to belong to the following companies: Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Limited, Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited and Globus Integrated Service Limited. Mrs Jonathan was given a platinum card and exclusive access to the accounts. According to reports, a houseboy, a driver and other domestic workers of a former Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Waripamowei Dudafa, were named as directors.”

NEWS - FG not probing former President Jonathan & his wife, Patience – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said the Federal Government is not persecuting former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife Patience. Reacting to reports of $15 million found in an account owned by Patience Jonathan, Lai Mohammed said it will be wrong for anyone to claim that the Federal government was probing the former first family as it was Patience Jonathan herself who came out to claim the foreign currency found in a strange account operated by a former aide of Jonathan.

He said this in an interview with journalists in Oro, Kwara State yesterday tuesday September 13th.
“If you look at the history of Mrs. Patience Jonathan’s issue, I think she was the one that came out to claim that the money found in the accounts of one of the aides to the former President, her husband, belonged to her. It was not the EFCC that claimed so. She claimed that the money that the guy was being prosecuted for belonged to her. It was only then they later found an extra $5m in another account. It is not as if anybody has gone out to probe Mrs. Jonathan directly or indirectly. Rather Mrs. Jonathan was the one that said ‘that money for which you are accusing Mr. X actually belongs to me. So, you cannot start talking of prosecution or persecution”he said

Arik Air, West and Central Africa’s largest airline, is pleased to announce that scheduled flights will resume from 11 am today, Wednesday September 14, 2016. Arik Air regrets the unfortunate inconvenience caused to its customers and reassures our customers of expedient rebooking of any affected flights.

SPORTS - Manchester United Fans Warned Not To Wear Club Colours For Feyenoord Match (Read Why)

Manchester United have warned the club’s supporters travelling to their Europa League game against Feyernoord on Thursday, not to wear their colours.
The warning contained in a letter, comes as a result of safety concerns in Rotterdam, following crowd trouble involving the Dutch club.
United fans have been allocated 1,400 tickets for the game at the De Kuip Stadium, which is expected to be half full of the normal 52,000 capacity.
Feyenoord have reduced their capacity, to avoid triggering suspended punishments they were handed by UEFA for crowd trouble.
The letter, reported in the Manchester Evening News, reads: “For your own safety it is advisable to maintain a low profile and avoid areas of potential conflict and by dressing conservatively.
“Once the game has ended, and Manchester United supporters are all out of the stadium, a special 1,200 seat train service will be provided from the stadium rail station. The service will stop at both Rotterdam and Amsterdam train stations.
“Please ensure that you carry your passport at all times, as required by law in the Netherlands. There is currently a general high threat level from terrorism in Europe and you should ensure that you are mindful of your own personal safety and security whilst travelling.
“Finally, we hope that you enjoy your visit to the Netherlands and thank you for your support.”

NEWS - NDLEA Arrests Man With Drugs Worth N31m At Lagos Airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDnternational Airport in Lagos.LEA) has arrested a South African based Nigerian, Abiodun Israel Banjo, for the possession of methamphetamine at the Murtala Mohammed I
In a statement by its spokesperson, Mitchell Ofoyeju, the agency said Banjo was arrested during the screening of South Africa bound passengers.
According to the statement, the parcels of methamphetamine weighed 3.435kgs with an estimated street value of N31 million in Nigeria.
NDLEA commander at the Abuja airport, Ahmadu Garba while speaking on the arrest said officials of the anti-narcotics agency discovered methamphetamine in Banjo’s bags during a luggage check.
He said the drugs were hidden under clothing and food items. Mr. Garba said the suspect was immediately arrested while investigations were ongoing.
The suspect, however, said his friend gave him the bags, denying any knowledge of its contents.
“I work in Pretoria. My friend in South Africa called me saying that his brother would give me two bags containing foodstuff to take to him. He also promised to give me two thousand dollars. I opened the bags and checked thoroughly, but could not find anything criminal. That was how I accepted to take the bags,” Banjo explained.
“I was surprised when the drug was detected under the bags. I feel very sad that my friend has implicated me,” he said.
NDLEA Chief Executive Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah has said the suspect would be charged to court.

NEWS - Top Military Expert warns that Britain is ‘totally ill-equipped’ to deal with Russian nuclear threat and could be ‘wiped out’

A top military expert has warned that the UK is ill equipped and not prepared for a nuclear war if Russia decides to engage them, hence the region will be wiped out if Putin decides at any point in time to go on the offensive against them.

Britain and Russia don't have the best of International relationships right now and reports indicate that Russia's military have the capacity and strength to walk over NATO's forces in the event of an agression.

Dr Andrew Foxall, director of Russian studies at influential think-tank The Henry Jackson Society told Daily Star Online: "As things stand, the UK is ill-equipped to deal with Russia.

"There is an urgent need to strengthen not only the UK’s defences, but those of NATO members as a whole.

"The alliance simply isn’t doing enough to build up the range of capabilities necessary to deter an aggressive and resurgent Russia."

Dr Foxall believes that the West's shift to focus on terrorism and conflicts in the Middle East over recent years has meant our traditional military capabilities have suffered.

He added: "For almost two decades, the UK, with its NATO partners, has focused on counterinsurgency warfare.

"The military has been up against lightly armed insurgent forces, rather than conventional state-on-state warfare.

"This very different form of war has introduced logistics systems, training, exercises, equipment, and priorities quite different from those required to respond to a Russian threat."
Russian forays in Georgia, Ukraine and now Syria have proved that they could decide to provocate UK by foraying into British territory too, Dr Foxall says.

"Russia’s Air Force bombers are frequently intercepted by RAF jets in close proximity of UK airspace.

"Russia’s warships often sail near British waters.

"And Russia’s submarines have attempted to record the ‘acoustic signature’ made by the Vanguard submarines that carry Trident nuclear missiles."
"More alarmingly, in 2008, a Russian Tu-160 “Blackjack” bomber carried out a dummy nuclear attack on northern England", he said.

"Flying towards Hull, the bomber came within 20 miles of British airspace before turning away.

"While the chances of war between Russia and the UK seem rather low, it remains a possibility Russia will prepare for it – and Moscow has been doing so for some time."

NEWS - Forget about Biafra - President Buhari tells agitators

President Buhari yesterday asked agitators of Biafra to forget the plan. Speaking with some NYSC members, particularly those from the south East, who paid him a visit at his home in Daura, Katsina state yesterday, President Buhari said
“Tell your colleagues who want Biafra to forget about it. As a military commander, I walked from Degem, a border town between the north and the east, to the border between Cameroons and Nigeria.
I walked on my foot for most of the 30 months that we fought the Nigeria-Biafra civil war, in which at least 2 million Nigerians were killed. We were made by our leaders to go and fight Biafra not because of money or oil, because oil was not critical factor then, but because of one Nigeria. So if leaderships at various levels failed, it was not the fault of the rest of Nigerians who have no quarrel with one another. So please tell your colleagues that we must be together to build this country. It is big enough for us and potentially big enough in terms of resources. Those who work hard will earn a respectable living. I have seen this country, I fought for this country and I will continue to work for the unity of this country,’’he said.

SPORTS - Balotelli failed at Liverpool because of ‘Gerrard’s jealousy’ says El Hadji Diouf

Balotelli’s torrid time at Anfield came to an end on transfer deadline day when he moved to Nice on a free transfer.
The Italian striker made the perfect start at his new club by scoring twice on his debut for the Ligue 1 side on Sunday in the 3-2 victory over Marseille.
Diouf isn’t surprised by how well Balotelli has started and believes if Gerrard hadn’t had so much influence at Liverpool he would have been a success on Merseyside.
‘I told him not to go to Liverpool. It wasn’t made for him, that things couldn’t go well with Gerrard, who has never had his talent and then said negative things about him,’ he told L’Equipe.
‘Gerrard is a jealous man who doesn’t like men of character. Mario is a good person that you should listen to. He’s not a guy who’s going to cause problems in the dressing room.
‘There are a lot of things that have been made up about him. People tell tales about him, but they’re often a load of rubbish.’
Balotelli supported Diouf’s claim that Anfield was wasted on him by saying after scoring on his debut that moving to Liverpool was the ‘worst mistake of my life’.
Diouf, who spent three years at Anfield, has previously spoken of his dislike of Gerrard.
In 2012, the former Senegal international, then a Leeds United player, suggested that the midfielder only thought about himself.
‘Gerrard was jealous of me back then (in 2002 when Diouf moved to Liverpool from Lens) as I had the world at my feet. There’s no one more selfish… he doesn’t care about anyone else,’ he said.
‘Gerrard would rather Liverpool lost and he scored. The old Liverpool guys can’t stand him. I won’t even start with [Jamie] Carragher.’
