Mike was my neighbour and Amaka was his wife.

Mike was a workaholic who travelled a lot and my wife had left me three years ago. Since then, Amaka and I had gotten very close.

At first, she was always making me meals and bringing to my apartment. I believed she felt pity for me since my wife left and she assumed I would be missing a chance to enjoy great home-cooked meals.

I found out that she was lonely and missed having a man. Her husband was not very affectionate and they hardly ever made love.

She was often close to tears when she described to me how lonely she was. One night, we were both on my couch after her meal when she said to me,

“I think your wife is an idiot to leave you. You’re a warm, affectionate kind of guy who takes care of his woman. I wish Mike was more like you.”

I took this to mean she was flirting with me. I welcomed it because I had always found Amaka really beautiful.

Her hair was always in a neat braid and her eyes were expressive. She hardly ever wore makeup but she had gorgeous facial features.

She often wore long-sleeved blouse when she came over, but I could tell she was endowed. Her B@.0bs strained against the tight top she wore.

I have two confessions to make from the outset

I am an incurable optimist. I am a firm believer in the maxim that no matter how dark a tunnel may appear to be, there will always be some ray of light at the end.

Of course, this presupposes that for you to encounter this light, you must not stand still at the darkest end of the tunnel. Therefore, the philosophy underpinning this belief is that for you to get to the bright end, you must keep moving away from the darkest end.

You must stay the course; perseverance is the watchword. Don’t quit because quitters never win. Here, pragmatism is an inevitable companion.

This conviction also informed my reaction to the socio-political and economic developments in our country in recent times.

I strongly believed that no matter how starkly the national augury may seem to tilt south, we shall overcome as long as we have a leadership that is prepared to put on its thinking cap, prepared to listen, be pragmatic and innovative in handling the myriad of problems confronting the nation.

The last thing we need right now is a leadership that is in denial, a leadership that revels, like the ostrich, in burying its head in the sand, thinking that nobody is seeing it. The last thing we need in this country is a leadership whose only solution to the problems is to point fingers of blame at others. Unfortunately, this is the leadership we have right now.

My second confession is that I am really afraid for this country’s fate under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.

My worry was not informed by the frightening numbers released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday, August 31, which finally confirmed what many already knew – that the economy had slid into recession or that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth at a woeful –2.06% performance did worse than expected. It was –0.36% in the first quarter.

The fact that $1 exchanged for N425 last week with a potential of going beyond N500 before the end of the year, while inflation rose to 17.1 per cent in July from 16.5 in June is scary, but didn’t worry me much.

Ditto the unemployment figure which increased to 13.3 percent from 12.1 per cent and investment inflows which dropped to the lowest levels at $647.1 million from $710 million.

These figures are the natural consequences of the otiose and impractical monetary and fiscal policies of the Buhari administration. Discerning Nigerians and members of the international community didn’t expect anything different.

But as grim as they are, what worries me most is the puerile antics of some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Buhari, and APC National Chairman, John Oyegun.

It baffles me that those who claim to be our leaders can actually indulge in such laughable political shenanigans.

Last week, APC National Chairman (South), Segun Oni, took the party’s penchant for tomfoolery to an absurd height when he claimed that it was voted into office to do the impossible.

“Yes, we are elected to do the impossible,” Oni was quoted as saying on Tuesday, August 30, insisting that“the economy was traumatised by a government whose only agenda was to win another round (of elections). “Therefore, everything that they could put into trying to win a second round, even bastardising the economy, was done and we are all here.”

The party Oni accused of traumatising the economy, of course, is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But who is Segun Oni, the man castigating the PDP? If the PDP is actually a devilish political party as some APC overlords would like us to believe, Oni and his cohorts represent the dark side of the party.
In fact, they were the reason Nigerians despised and rejected the PDP. Oni was not just a chieftain of the PDP, he was “elected” Ekiti State governor on its platform and sworn in on May 29, 2007.

He was one of the people former President Olusegun Obasanjo used, as confirmed by the Court of Appeal three years later, to ruin our democracy. Oni became one of the public faces of the fabled PDP rigging machine. He defrauded the Ekiti people by stealing their mandate. In 2010, the Appeal Court declared him an impostor and sacked him from office. He lost the rerun election ordered by the court to Kayode Fayemi who contested on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

In 2012, Oni became PDP national vice chairman (South West). All this while, the Ifaki-Ekiti-born politician never saw anything wrong with the party until he was sacked from the post.

In 2014, Oni dumped the PDP for the newly formed party of “saints”, the APC, and threw his weight behind the re-election of his political nemesis, Fayemi.

Of course, Fayemi, now minister of mines and steel development, lost the governorship election on June 21, 2014 to the PDP candidate, Ayo Fayose.

So, in the 16 years the PDP was in power and “ruined” Nigeria, Oni was not only a member for 15 years, he was a high-ranking officer, who played his own part in ruining Ekiti State in particular and Nigeria in general. It took Fayemi four years to clean up the mess Oni left behind. But his sins have been forgiven or simply covered because he has joined the ranks of the “saints” in the APC after losing out in the PDP. That is sheer hypocrisy.

And that is what you see all over the place. Most of the people making noise today and calling the PDP names were once members of the party who held high offices. They were part of the decision making machinery that formulated the policies that “ruined” Nigeria.

So, how could such characters blatantly insult our sensibilities by unashamedly pointing the fingers of blame elsewhere and diverting attention from themselves?

Anytime I hear any of the former chieftains of the PDP talking about how Nigeria was ruined in 16 years and how they have come to salvage the country, my stomach churns.
These people capitalise on our very short memory to insult us. They think we are fools. In a sense, we are. Because it is only suckers, people inured to self-respect that can take what Nigerians take from their political leaders without a whimper.

In 15 months, Buhari, by sheer lack of capacity, has completely ruined what remained of Nigeriaand its economy, yet some people still hail him as a “messiah”.
And Oni had the effrontery to tell us the APC was voted into office to do the “impossible”.

Didn’t the APC market itself as the party with the capacity to save Nigeria from the ruination caused by the PDP? At what point did the party realise that governing Nigeria was not just a difficult task but an impossibility? And if governing Nigeria has become impossible, why is the APC still in office? Shouldn’t it step down to allow people who believe that turning Nigeria’s fortunes around for good is still a possibility, no matter how daunting the task, to govern?

Perhaps, these APC jokers do not know or may have conveniently forgotten. They are in office because they told Nigerians they will do the job and deliver on their promises. Nigerians will hold them accountable.

Deflecting attention by pointing fingers of blame at the PDP is a no-brainer. Nigerians gave their verdict on the PDP more than a year ago. So, the joke is no longer on the PDP, it is on the APC. And no matter how hard the APC tries to obfuscate issues, one thing is certain. Never will it ever be said that Buhari was the best president Nigeria never had like it is said of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Instead, he is working very hard to achieve the opposite. The way he is going, Buhari is likely to end up the worst president Nigeria ever had unless he changes gear.

NEWS - Armed Fulani Herdsmen Take Over National stadium / Abuja City, Buhari still silent

Suspected Armed Fulani herdsmen, have on Monday evening, invaded the $300 million National Stadium Complex in Abuja, turning it into a grazing reserve for their cattle.

This is in spite of an existing order, prohibiting open grazing in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, an order the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, AEPB, is empowered to enforce.

The invasion came barely few days after the FCT Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, had directed the AEPB and the FCT Task Team on Environment, to get rid of herdsmen involved in grazing in the capital city.

The herdsmen, who usually invade the stadium in groups to feed their cattle, sometimes overwhelm the stadium security officials who try to stop them from their activities, especially at the Package B section of the stadium.

“It has been a routine for these herdsmen to herd their cows to this place for grazing, especially in the last one year. They invade the stadium at will, and it seems nobody is ready to stop or caution them,” said a security official attached to the stadium.

Also Speaking, the Stadium Manager, Sati Mbok, said that the management has been making frantic efforts to stop the herdsmen, but they have rather continued to increase in their numbers.

It was learnt that the herdsmen, who are usually armed with some dangerous weapons, have become a source of concern to those who are managing the expansive stadium.

The Public Relations Officer of AEPB, Sam Musa, said added, that the agency has taken several measures to tackle the problem of the herdsmen, but has encountered a lot of impediments in their bid to flush the cows out of the city.

“We’ve really been warning and sensitizing them, and the process is on-going, because you know some of them are new in the city and they keep having the information. We have been working together with their leaders to also sensitize them. You know education is number one; once you educate people and they can understand why they should not do it, our job becomes easier,” Musa said.

However, beyond the challenge posed by these herdsmen, under-utilization and poor maintenance culture has turned the $300 million National Stadium, Abuja, into an abandoned edifice, with many of its key facilities rusting away, and a huge chunk of the expansive sports complex overgrown with weeds.

The multi-million dollar edifice, was built when Nigeria hosted the 8th All Africa Games in 2003, COJA, 13 years ago, but has become a shadow of itself over time.

NEWS - Landlord sacks Five Tenants For Supporting APC in Edo

A landlord in Uzea Community in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo state has evicted five tenants in his house for supporting the All Progressives Congress, APC, against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the forthcoming Edo governorship election.

The tenants evicted were,Mr Sylvester Chukwuemeka, Okosun Christiana and Ogbeide Elizabeth.

The tenants narrated their ordeals and how the landlord wants every one of them to vote for the PDP which he happens to be a member. But they all refused.

Speaking about the ordeal in Esan dialect was one of the tenants identified , Okosun Christiana, she said,

“We don’t have any problem, just party differences, he told us he wanted everyone in the house to support PDP, because he is a member of the party, but I refused.

“I told him that I have been in APC for a very long time that even if the PDP is buying me a car, I prefer to remain in the APC, and he said since that is my stand; I should consider myself evicted from his house,” She explained.

Also speaking, another of the evicted tenants,

Sylvester Chukwuemeka, a victim of the eviction disclosed that although his rent was due but the action of the Landlord contradicts the principle of fair play and justice just because they refused to support the PDP.

“I don’t understand why the landlord will just decide to drive us out of his house because we are not supporting PDP. I pay my rent regularly and this is not fair to me.

“The state government should come to our aid because I don’t know when it became a crime to support a party.”

It was gathered that the Acting Executive Chairman of Edo State Internal Revenue Service, Barr. Emmanuel Usoh, has made provision for the tenants by giving them tenants some bags of cement and money to build their own houses.

VIEWPOINTS - Another lie by Osibanjo ,'Nigeria badly mismanaged by past governments'

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday said Nigeria’s worsening economic experience was as a result of sabotage and bad governance.

Mr. Osinbajo, who was receiving the Northern States Pentecostal Bishops Forum in his office in Abuja, said apart from depreciation in Naira value, the country’s economy had no reserves to support it.

“At the height of the oil boom, there were no savings,” he said. “There is no country in the world that can face the kind of stealing that took place in Nigeria without having to deal with the consequences, including the current state of the economy.”

In addition to the massive fall in global oil prices, the VP blamed the situation on vandalism of pipelines, which led to the loss of about one million barrels of oil daily for more than six months.

The destruction of gas pipelines, he said, also resulted in the cut in public power supply.

The country’s economy, which has been battling the negative impact of dwindling oil revenues as a result of declining global oil prices, has officially been confirmed to now be recession, with dire consequences on Nigerians.

But, the Vice President said although the times were hard today, there was “great hope the country will prosper again soon.”

“This country has been badly governed. We are dealing, for instance, with the embezzlement of funds to the tune of $15 billion in one sector alone,” he said

Urging Christian and religious leaders to openly condemn corruption, Mr. Osinbajo said they must stand up against corruption, describing it as the single most important reason of the current state of the country’s economy today.

He said the recent gross domestic product (GDP) figures by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed growth in agriculture and solid minerals.

In addition, he said the social investment programmes were on course, with about 500,000 jobs scheme expected to take off soon.

Earlier, leader of the delegation, Archbishop John Daniel, who pledged the support of the forum to government’s diversification of the economy, called for access to lower interest rates for businesses.

The forum also asked the federal government to checkmate the activities of violent herdsmen by creating ranches in the states for them and help promote religious harmony.

The Vice President said security agencies have clear instructions to deal with those carrying arms and also deal with anyone causing violence.

He lamented the country’s slow criminal justice system, which was affecting delivering of justice in most cases.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has condemned the call for the postponement of the Edo State governorship election by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Police, saying “It is obvious that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is challenged and afraid of losing the election and the party is using the federal government security agencies to cause a postponement of the election so as to be able to perfect its new rigging plans.”

The governor, who raised the alarm that “democracy is in danger” under the APC government, said; “obviously, within two years of APC government, Nigeria is in both economic and political recession and this should worry all true lovers of the country.” Reacting to the DSS and Police position that the election be postponed because of security threat, Governor Fayose, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said he was worried that “democracy in Nigeria has now graduated from inconclusive elections to postponement of elections in other to return APC candidates at all cost.” He said;

“Within two year, the APC government not only destroyed the economy of Nigeria, it has destroyed the legacy of free, fair and credible electoral process bequeathed on the country by the PDP.” The governor said; “The questions Nigerians must ask the APC-led federal government are; what security threat can overcome over 50,000 security personnel in an election holding in just one out of the 36 States in Nigeria? If election must be postponed in just one State because of security threat, what will then happen in 2019 when elections will be conducted in the entire country?

“Another question is; were they unaware of the security challenge when President Mohammadu Buhari went to Edo State to campaign for the APC yesterday? “No doubt, this is a game being played by the APC because it has become so imminent that the party cannot win the election if it is held on Saturday as scheduled.

“The postponement is obviously meant to give room for the APC to perfect a new rigging strategy and lovers of democracy in Nigeria should begin to see how the APC aims at perpetuating itself in power beyond 2019 even now that the party has been rejected by Nigerians.”
