NEWS - Jonathan becomes first African leader to win Martin Luther King human rights award

Former President Goodluck Jonathan was awarded in the US on Thursday for his leadership in human rights in Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria.
Jonathan, who was awarded in recognition of his leadership in “human rights, social justice and universal fight for freedom”, becomes the first African leader to be so honoured.
The presidential award was presented by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, founded by the late American human rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr, best known for his human rights struggles and the I-have-a-dream speech.
In statement on Friday, the former president expressed his pleasure in being so honoured and also meeting the sister of the famous human rights activist.
“I thank Dr. Charles Steele Jr, President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, and the executive of the SCLC for honoring me today,” he said.

“It was also a pleasure to meet Naomi King, the sister of the late American Civil Rights leader and founder of the SCLC, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, who was kind enough to attend the event and identify with the goals and aspirations of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation.
“By this award, I am further inspired to continue to work for the advancement of democracy, peace and progress in Nigeria and Africa.”
Jonathan is billed to be in the US for the 2016 Hope Global Forums conference, where he is expected to Succeed the 42nd president of the US, Bill Clinton as keynote speaker.
In the letter sent to Jonathan in December 2015, he was invited to join the biggest 500 companies in the world in their promotion of King’s human right ideals.
“We invite you to join Fortune 500 CEO’s, private investors, financial leaders and government officials to connect and collaborate on this vision,” the letter had read.
“With the theme ‘Reimagining the Global Economy: Inclusive Economics’, the annual meeting is set against the backdrop of the Martin Luther King Holiday weekend and gathers leaders from government, community and the private sector to outline a vision for the modern global economy.”
Jonathan was earlier in Florida to welcome his second grandchild, delivered by his adopted daughter, Inebharapu Paul.

ENTERTAINMENT GIST -Mariah Carey insures her vocal cords and hamstrings for $70 million

Mariah, who has one of the most powerful voices in the music industry, just insured her vocal cords and hamstrings for $35 million dollars each. The 46 year old mother of two, who is on tour, insured her most valuable assets because if anything happens to them it could result in a huge loss of profits

TMZ reports below...

Mariah Carey no doubt has the most expensive vocal cords and hamstrings in America ... because we found out she's insured both for $70 million.

Mariah's on tour now, and it's so successful she just agreed to extend it to South America. Fact is, there are millions of dollars on the line now, and if anything happens to her major assets it could result in an epic loss of profits.

To guard against all that, our sources say Mariah and company just got a $35 million insurance policy for her voice, and another policy of equal amount for her gams.
We're told the monthly premium is super expensive ... in the many thousands of dollars, but it's worth it.

You would think she'd invest at least $10 mil on her ass

NEWS - Ibe Kachikwu attributes unavailability of forex, pipeline vandalism, subsidy payments as reasons for fuel scarcity

In a short video which he posted on his Facebook wall, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Ibe Kachikwu, explained why the fuel scarcity has persisted this long. According to him, unavailability of Forex, activities of pipeline vandals and the reduction in subsidy payment had adversely affected the importation of refined oil into Nigeria by many of the oil marketers

"First on resumption in August, we had a very major problem in our hand because subsidies of N500-N600 billion hadn't been paid for over a one year period of time. and so those who were importing had began to very quietly reduce the level of importation that they had and although I struggled very hard and got the Assembly approval and the President's approval to pay a good portion of that subsidy sometime in November, by then it was too late because although they got the money, they didn't have access to foreign exchange and so the critical reason why we have this supply gap today is that although NNPC has its own 445,000 barrels allocation of crude which is meant to meet 50% of your the country's delivery, the Individuals who should provide the remaining 50% are not bringing any product"he said
He identified incessant pipeline vandalization as a major factor responsible for the short fall in fuel supply
"The second problem is pipeline vandlization. If you look at the statistics of this year versus last year, we have had almost two times the number of pipeline disruptions that we have had over the last 2-3 years."
According to Kachikwu, no matter the transformation agenda of the government, issues of fuel scarcity have the tendency to bring down the polity and cause mayhem
"I have had to box my way to the CBN to get a bit of Foreign exchange because we provide a bulk of this foreign exchange and we should have a bit of it to help stabilize the situation because fuel queue, do not make any mistake about it, it doesn't matter what we achieve in our transformation agenda, is the single most difficult item which if not solved can bring down the polity and can create a mayhem here"he said.

NEWS - Nigerian-born high school student gets accepted by all 8 Ivy League schools in the US

Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna, high-school student from Long Island, N.Y., and the daughter of Nigerian immigrants has a big decision to make soon.

The Elmont High School valedictorian was accepted into all eight Ivy League schools! - Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University.

She also gained admission to Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Augusta said her parents instilled in her the value of education.

"Though I was born here in America, I visited Nigeria many times," she said. "And I’ve seen that my cousins don’t have the same opportunities that I have. So definitely, whatever I do, I want to make sure that it has an impact on Nigeria."

She also says her own tenacity and persistence helped shape her into becoming a great student. But as with a lot of students, she did face hardships with some classes.

"I’ve struggled with numerous classes in the past," Augusta said. "But I guess what allowed me to be successful, ultimately, in those classes, at the end, is my persistence and my tenacity."

On Monday, Augusta received an invitation to the White House Science Fair. Science is her passion, and she was an Intel finalist for her research on cement that could help prevent underwater oil rigs from rupturing.

Michelle Flannory is Augusta's research adviser.

"She knows that you have to work," she said. "Is she naturally talented? Yes, but she definitely pursues excellence."Flannory said.

Augusta hasn't decided on which college to attend, but with a GPA of 101.6, and a recent invitation to the White House Science Fair, there's no doubt that she'll continue her academic excellence and will thrive whatever choice she makes"

ENTERTAINMENT GIST - Ali baba blames buhari for his weight gain, says this is not the change we voted for oo

When celebrities start complaining that Nigeria needs solution, that means that Nigeria really need help from God.
Ali Baba has joined the league of Nigerian celebrities who are wondering what the government would do to reduce the suffering of the masses.
However, his own headache is that he just added weight and is blaming the government for that.
Just few weeks ago, he got into a heated argument with a group of novelties and he won a handful of cash, after insisting that his prediction will come to pass. He was N2million richer, maybe, that is why he is adding in weight.

Everything is just on the high side in this country. The heat. The fuel scarcity. The unemployment figures. Even my weight that I checked in Dubai on an electronic weighing machine that put my weight at 95.6kg… Has gone up to 100kg!!!! This is not the change we voted for ooo. Or could it be that eba and Afang I ate on arrival? No, this bathroom scale is faulty. Definitely,” he wrote on his Instagram.
