IDEAS - Biafra, Buhari and The Easter Day Rising (Part 1) - Femi Fani-Kayode

“The power of a bold idea uttered publicly in defiance of dominant opinion cannot be easily measured. Those special people who speak out in such a way as to shake up not only the self-assurance of their enemies, but the complacency of their friends, are precious catalysts for change”― Howard Zinn.
This is one of the most profound assertions that I have ever heard. We must all learn from it regardless of the challenges that we may be facing in our country today.
In a special message to the Congress on the Internal Security of the United States on August 8, 1950, President Harry S. Truman said,
"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear."
Permit me to begin this essay with an aside.  I do not intend to incite anyone against the government or the Nigerian state by making this contribution and neither do I believe in an armed struggle.
If there was ever an elephant in the Nigerian room then it is Biafra. Given that let us explore it together in this two part discourse and let us bare our minds.
The Buhari administration cannot tolerate or brook any form of dissent and neither are they comfortable with criticism or free speech.
They are desperately trying to establish a culture of silence in our country. They are particularly uncomfortable with the subject matter of this essay.
Their double standards are made all the more manifest by the fact that they have acknowledged and recognized the right of self-determination for the people of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in their quest for independence from the Kingdom of Morocco whilst at the same time they have denied those that believe in the establishment of Biafra and the exercise of that very same right of self-determination here in Nigeria.
As if that were not bad enough they went even further by describing Biafra as a matter that is "dead and buried" which must not be discussed under ANY circumstances.
The Buhari administration appears to have forgotten the fact that charity begins at home. You cannot give those from outside your shores what you are not prepared to offer your own people.
If the quest for independence is good enough for the people of Sahrawi Arab Republic then surely it is good enough for the people of Biafra or any other ethnic nationality in Nigeria if that is what they really want.
The suggestion that we should not even mention let alone discuss the idea of Biafra is simply absurd. Those that subscribe to that view often argue that three million people were killed in order to ensure that Nigeria was kept together and consequently there can be no going back.
This is a specious, self-serving and intellectually lazy argument. And this is especially so given the fact that those that have put it overlook the fact that the root causes of the civil war appear to be back with us today.
If you don't cure the ailment and get rid of its root cause then you cannot complain about the consequences of its continued existence or its symptoms. If you don’t clean up the mess you cannot complain about its stench. Air freshener alone cannot do it: forgive my crudity but if you don’t flush the toilet after using it a terrible smell is bound to linger.
The matter is simple and clear: as long as the Igbo people of eastern Nigeria feel marginalized, persecuted, cheated, vilified and wronged the spirit of Biafra will continue to flourish.
As long as Igbos are targeted and slaughtered like flies at the drop of the hat in the northern part of our country, or indeed in any other part,  Biafra will continue to thrive and burn in the hearts of every Igbo man, woman and child. Whether we like it or not that is a reality and there is nothing anyone can do about it.
Quite apart from that I deeply resent the fact that our government has got the nerve and has cultivated the temerity to venture to tell us what we should and what we should not mention or discuss. Surely even the madness of tyranny has its limits.
Those that are at the helm of affairs in our country today may have the power to kill, torture, detain indefinitely or jail those that do not share their views but they do not have the power to kill an idea. And an idea whose time has come cannot be wished away or stopped by any force from hell or on earth.
In this essay we shall defy the government, ignore the critics, shed the fear and share some inconvenient truths.
100 years ago, on what is known as the Easter Rising Day, the Republic of Ireland began their struggle for independence from Great Britain when a handful of brave men went to the center of Dublin, raised the new Irish flag and openly declared the establishment of the Irish Republic.
The rebellion was crushed but it signaled the beginning of a prolonged armed struggle.
During the course of that struggle approximately thousands of Irish men, women and children were killed by the British occupation forces over the years but eventually the Republic of Ireland won their freedom and became an independent sovereign state.
A few days ago on Easter day the Irish Government and people celebrated the 100th anniversary of Easter Rising Day with great pride, joy, pomp and style. The celebrations were attended by delegations from the Basque separatist movement and officials of the Catalan regional government of Spain.
Both of these courageous political movements have been attempting to exercise their right of self-determination, break off from Spain and establish their own independent nations for many years and as each year passes they are getting closer to achieving their objective.
Those that believe in the right of self-determination of the ethnic nationalities in Nigeria and particularly those that are fighting for the creation of the sovereign state of Biafra have so much to learn from the history and struggles of the people of Ireland.
The Irish suffered immeasurably under British occupation for hundreds of years and literally millions of them were enslaved and killed over that period of time.
Yet in the end they managed to break the yoke and secure their liberation and triumph over the cruel subjugation and tyranny of British rule.
It is my belief that by God's grace those that are being oppressed, butchered and murdered by the Nigerian state today in an attempt to forcefully keep our country one and those that wish to break off to form their own country on the basis of the principle of self-determination shall also eventually prevail.
This is particularly so for the Igbo people of the south-eastern region of our country who have suffered more than any other ethnic group in Nigeria. Permit me to remind those that doubt this assertion that it was the Igbo that were slaughtered in their hundreds of thousands in the core north during the pogroms of 1966.
Igbo men, women and children were butchered on sight all over the north simply because they were Igbo and for no other reason. Even pregnant women were not spared. This led directly to our civil war in which no less than three million Igbos were killed including one million Igbo children who were starved to death.
After the war they were deprived of all their properties outside Igbo land except for in Lagos and the south west where they were treated with some level of decency and allowed to have their properties back.
Everywhere else in the country they could not reclaim the properties that they owned before the war and such properties were declared "abandoned property", confiscated by the various regional and state governments and handed over to the local indigenous people.
As if that were not bad enough after the civil war every igbo man and woman, no matter how much they had in the bank before the war, was given only twenty pounds from their respective banks to begin a new life. Millions of pounds and many fortunes were lost in this way and the truth is that the Igbo suffered immeasurably as a consequence of this unjust policy.
It is a testimony to their resilience and nothing else that they were able to get back on their feet and within a period of ten years after the civil war an Igbo man was elected Vice President of our country. They also thrived in the private sector due to their diligence and hard work.
Yet in spite of that the systemic persecution and marginalization of the Igbo people did not stop within the Federal Government, the public sector, the civil service, the security and intelligence agencies and the Armed Forces.
They were prevented from reaching the top in virtually all these sectors right up until President Olusegun Obasanjo was elected in 1999.
It was President Olusegun Obasanjo that began the effective post-war rehabilitation of the Igbo in the public sector when he started to appoint them into sensitive and strategic positions within his government and within the security agencies and Armed Forces.
A good example of that is Lt-General Chidabikia Isaac Obiokor who was the first Igbo man to he appointed as GOC in the Nigerian Army since the civil war. Another is Mr. Ogbonna Okechukwu Onovo who was the first Igbo man to be appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police since the civil war and who was later appointed Inspector General of Police two years after Obasanjo left office.
Then came the Ojo Maduekwes, the Andy Ubas, the Ngozie Okonjo-Iwealas, the Charles Soludos, the Emeka Chikelus, the Frank Nwekes, the George Obiozors and so many other bright and promising stars from the east who all wielded far more influence and power than their political offices had to offer in President Obasanjo’s government and who were all his protégées and appointees.
Without Obasanjo's premeditated and conscious policy of wanting to rehabilitate the Igbo and bring them back into the main stream none of these people would have achieved the great success that they have achieved today and none would have been brought into the national limelight.
Yet despite Obasanjo's efforts the truth is that, between 1970 when the war ended right up until today, whenever there are attacks against people in the northern part of Nigeria the Igbo are singled out for more slaughter, more ethnic cleansing and more mass murder than anyone else. NEWS -Thief Gets Stuck In Between Electric Poles, Bleeds While Trying To Break Into A Shop. (Photo)

While this is somewhat hilarious, it’s also in a way, disturbing. Two thieves had planned to creep into the back of a tuckshop to steal but their plan resulted to a humiliation after one of them got stuck between a wall and an electricity pole next to the shop and was left hanging upside down.
The second thief, left his other party hanging and fled!
An old man next door saw the thief bleeding and exclaimed for help. When the owner of the ‘Eat Some More‘ shop in Durban, arrived at the scene, he couldn’t believe what he saw.
Owner Themba Gumbi, 51, disclosed that the neighbour had told him that the thief had tried to get into the tuckshop from the roof of a shack next door.
“The thug said he got stuck between the walls. There was blood everywhere as he was bleeding from his stomach.
“There was a lot of blood on the door. I think the other thug was injured. I just thank my ancestors that the men didn’t manage to break in.
“If they managed to gain entry, they may have injured my family or done something even worse before stealing my stock,” said Themba.

SPORTS - I think we've achieved, I won't resign- NFF boss Amaju Pinnick says

Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Pinnick has come out to defend his term in office after critics called on him to resign following Super Eagles failure to qualify for AFCON 2017.

Amaju highlighted his achievements with other national football teams during his tenure as enough proof his stewardship has been a success and categorically stated he won't resign as he had a four year tenure to complete.

"I was elected by the Congress of the Nigeria Football Federation for a four-year team and I don't see why I should be asked to resign with over two years to serve," said Pinnick. With all due respect, I don't think we have done badly in these past one and half years that we have been in office and I have a four-year mandate which I intend to see through. When we came in we had a case running for nine months and this affected us. "In between we won Fifa Under 17 World Cup, we won the Africa Women's Championship and we also qualified for the women' s Under17 and U20 World Cups coming up this year. “I think we have achieved. Again we have very young Super Eagles players that should be the future of the game in the country. On the choice of Kaduna as venue of the Afcon match against Egypt, we picked Kaduna because of the passion the people have for the game and the fact that the venue boasts of the best pitch in the country presently and they stood behind the team all through. Aside from that, the Super Eagles have never lost a match there so it was all these that we considered on picking the Ahmadu Bello Stadium to host Egypt,” he said.

NEWS - 20 year old model jumps naked to her death rather than be raped by two men

20 year old model and university student named Gulay Bursali, jumped naked from a very high Istanbul apartment where she was staying with her boyfriend, to escape being raped by an estate agent who rented them the flat, alongside his friend.

Gulay Bursali and her boyfriend  had asked a property agent if there was an empty apartment they could rent for the weekend, and were given the keys to a property in Basaksehir, a district located on the European side of Istanbul. But after partying with friends in a local bar, they had gone back to the flat where they ended up being attacked by the estate agent.

According to the boyfriend’s statement to police, the estate agent had tricked his way inside by claiming he wanted to get some things from the apartment.

Once inside, the estate agent and a friend beat him up, took his phone and locked him inside one of the rooms. They then locked the young woman in another room, and stripped her naked before she managed to open the window and climbed outside, threatening to jump unless they let her go.

Eyewitnesses said they had seen the naked young woman hanging out of the window.
One man told local TV:
"I heard somebody screaming help, and I thought maybe it was just someone messing around. Then I saw a naked girl hanging out of the window.
"She was yelling don't pull me inside, if you try to pull me inside I will jump. Those inside were shouting at her to come inside, saying they were going to call the police.
"But she wasn't interested, I heard her threaten them two more times to say that she would jump, and was calling for somebody to help.
"I didn't say anything, I felt if she moved even a bit she was going to fall and that was why I didn't say anything. I just called the police. While I was doing that, she jumped."
The boyfriend who was freed from the flat and quizzed has now been released and police are looking for the estate agent and his friend.

Below is a photo of the building she jumped from

NEWS - Killings continue in Mile 12 ethnic clash

Some parts of the   Mile 12 market and environs in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos, yesterday, were tension-soaked  following fresh killings by armed hoodlums suspected to be from the Northern part of the country. Four persons were reported killed in the renewed midnight ethnic clash which started on Wednesday night. Saturday Vanguard gathered that in spite of the curfew imposed in the area, some armed men arrived at  the early hours of yesterday through the canal and destroyed some shops in the market. Some homeless persons sleeping in the market and adjourning streets were suspected to have been killed. Ketu-traders A resident, who simply gave his name as Oluwatimileyin, said: “ The Hausa men  crossed the Agilinti river with canoe and attacked residents of an estate at Isheri North, last night. They even burnt some buildings”. Irked by the invasion, some armed  Yoruba  youths  converged close to the market in readiness for another clash at about 1pm.  The irate youths, who chanted war songs attempted to invade the market and destroy  shops belonging to  Hausa traders.  But they were dispersed by security operatives with tear gas cannisters. Consequently, residents in the affected streets have been fleeing their abodes, following alleged threats by some Hausa youths to set their houses on fire at midnight.  Also, Hausa residents in the area have abandoned their homes for fear of being caught in the ethnic war. The popular Mile 12 market  was Thursday, turned into a theatre of war, during which no fewer than 12 persons were killed and several others injured. What started like a storm in a tea cup on Tuesday, snowballed into a big fracas two days later. The  ongoing crisis which began with a verbal confrontation  took a violent twist  after a commercial motorcyclist  popularly called okada hit a female trader. Consequently,  the popular Mile 12 market was  shut by the state government, with curfew imposed on four neighbouring streets:  Maidan, Agilinti 1, Agilinti 2 and Oniyanrin, close to the market. How it happened According to eye witnesses’ account, a commercial motorcyclist from the northern part of the country who was riding against traffic  hit one of the residents, a Yoruba woman who sustained severe injuries. This attracted sympathy from co-residents, who argued that she should be taken to a nearby hospital at the expense of the rider. The Okada rider bluntly refused the idea and called his colleagues from the same ethnic group, during which a fight ensued.  This matter was amicably settled by some community leaders. Unfortunately, the victim passed on the following day, a development that drew the anger of the woman’s friends and subsequently led to fresh crisis on Thursday. On that Thursday most of those who became victims of the clash were commuters either going or returning from work. Sensing danger, the Okada rider’s friends and other co-okada riders from the Northern extraction re-mobilised and positioned themselves in various places wielding dangerous weapons to attack the Yoruba. The news spread such that some hoodlums took advantage of the situation by proceeding to Mile 12 market to vandalise and loot the traders’ shops. On noticing the development, the Hausa also strategised to torch and vandalise vehicles and buildings and by the time the dust settled, no fewer than 12 lives were lost while 12 buildings, 10 vehicles and other valuable items were destroyed.

Victims’ accounts
Some of the victims, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard, condemned the belated response of the Police at Mile 12 Division. “The  Police at Mile 12 did not respond on time and when they eventually arrived the scene, they could not stop the raging war,’’ Mr Igba Andrew, one of the victims, who was badly injured  and who also had his two-year-old son  kidnapped during the incident said: “I was at home when some Hausas came with guns, broken bottles and matchetes and forcefully took my son away and up till now, his whereabouts remain unknown,” A clergy, Pastor Adekunle Tanimowo, had his only building, church and car razed. ‘’I am left with nothing and only God can restore me. I was in the church preparing for the day’s event when my wife screamed in the house and I rushed to attend to her but to our surprise, some men were seen afar off conversing in Hausa language and we sensed danger. Without wasting time, we fled the scene with our children and while hiding somewhere, I got a call from somebody who alerted me that all our properties have been torched by the attackers.” They left me when I spoke Hausa – Survivor Another victim, Mr Kunle Afariogun, who escaped death by the whiskers said he ran into the hoodlums on his way back from work. ‘’Thank God I understand Hausa language, if not, only God knows what would have happened to me. I was on my way home when I ran into them and they asked me if I were an Hausa man and I answered in the affirmative. But they were not convinced and asked me to start speaking in Hausa Language which I did and they responded in Hausa Language ‘he is one of us, don’t kill him.’’’ A resident of Agilinti, Mrs Oluwakemi Ologbon, who is presently seeking refuge in Ikorodu, said she was scared to return to the area. ‘’My husband is taking refuge with his friend while I am taking refuge with my elder sister. Yesterday’s experience was a signal that Boko Haram has infiltrated Lagos and the government must act fast. Thank God I escaped with all my children but what about so many people who have lost their means of livelihood? Six buildings to my house were razed when I fled with my family but my husband decided to stay elsewhere while we all came to Ikorodu,” she said. Residents flee homes over possible reprisal attacks When Saturday Vanguard visited the community, it was gathered that many residents had left their homes in order to avoid been lynched by the hoodlums. A resident, Motunrayo, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard on phone said: “I have left for Mowe. And I am not the only one who has left the community. Some members of the community had gone as far as Ibadan. I don’t want to die. I believe that going to Mowe will help me evade any attack.” On how she escaped, she said: “We moved through the bush path. And on getting to Isheri-Osun axis, we boarded vehicles to our respective locations.” Motunrayo noted that they would not return until there was strong assurance from the government and the traditional rulers of both communities that normalcy has returned.

Ambode meets traditional rulers in crisis location Meanwhile, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, yesterday, met with traditional leaders of Mile 12 and environs, to find ways of resolving the ongoing fracas, 24 hours after declaring curfew in the area. At the meeting held behind closed doors in Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, sources said that Ambode who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mr. Tunji Bello, asked the traditional rulers to instruct their people to sheathe their swords in order for peace to return to the community. Saturday Vanguard gathered that the Governor assured the traditional rulers that the government was working with the security operatives to end the frequent face-off between the Hausa and Yoruba communities in the axis. In an interview with Saturday Vanguard, Baale of Maidan-Mile 12, Babatunde Ogunjobi, said that the crux of our meeting was on the ongoing crisis in Mile 12, saying “we used the opportunity to express our displeasure over the crisis rocking our community.’’ However, armed security men have been strategically positioned to ward off any reprisal attack. Saturday Vanguard gathered over 50 persons were arrested yesterday in connection with the crisis and were currently being detained at the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department,SCIID. Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command , Dolapo Badmus, said there was no fresh killing yesterday. She said “the police have dominated the place since Thursday. We are also assisted by the Nigerian Army. We have almost 141 people arrested in connection with the case and we will charge them to court. The suspects were arrested since yesterday (Thursday ) up to the early hours of this morning (yesterday) . Investigation is still ongoing”.

VIDEO: Tottenham Hotspur 2 – 2 Arsenal [Premier League] Highlights 2015/16

Alexis Sanchez grabbed a 2-2 draw for 10-man Arsenal in the North London derby at White Hart Lane as Tottenham passed up the chance to seize the initiative in the Premier League title race.
Aiming to bounce back from a midweek reverse at West Ham, Tottenham pressed their opponents relentlessly during the opening period but fell behind in the 39th minute when Aaron Ramsey netted a superlative backheel.
But the prospect of Arsenal securing a derby triumph to relieve the pressure on Arsene Wenger following consecutive defeats to Manchester United and Swansea City unravelled at pace early in the second half.
Francis Coquelin was rightly red-carded for two bookings and, following Toby Alderweireld’s 60th-minute equaliser, Harry Kane put Tottenham in front with a spectacular strike.
