VIEWPOINTS - After the white man, the next most important person made by God was Igbo—Ekwueme quotes northerners

Dr. Alex Ekwueme, the SECOND Republic vice president of Nigeria, has explained the need for Igbos to trust each other as they did in the past, affirming that that is the only way Igbo land would move forward in the Nigeria project.
Dr. Ekwueme, who said this Sunday at the traders’ summit and award ceremony organized by Anambra Consensus Project, ACP, at Amaokpala in Orumba Norht local government area of the state; to honour outstanding traders in all the 57 major markets in Anambra State, noted that he recalled that Igbo were strongly united before and immediately after Nigerian Independence wondering what went wrong over the years based on what is currently happening in the Igbo –speaking states of the country.
“When I returned to Nigeria after my studies abroad, I worked for the then ESSO West Africa Limited and the job took me to many cities in the Northern part of the country. I found out that there was no place you would go and won’t find an Igbo man and they all cooperated well” If you wanted to buy APC medicine in any city in the North, whether it was Kano, Maiduguri, Kaduna, Bauchi, Bida, Minna, anywhere, it was an Igbo person that would sell it to you. Igbo people were so industrious that Northerners were saying that after the white man, the next most important person created by God was Igbo”.
He continued:
“When Igbo was Igbo, there was so much unity, such that once Igbo leaders met and took a decision, every Igbo person would abide by it. The trust among Igbo was responsible for the reason apprenticeship became popular with the result that parents would allow their children to stay with an established Igbo man to learn a trade for periods ranging from five to 10 years after which the apprentice would then be settled to start his own business.
“Even after the settlement, the newly settled young trader would be getting goods on credit from his former master and return the money after sale because of the trust that existed. But lack of trust has diminished that age long cooperation between the master and his former apprentice, which is very worrisome. “The main problem of the Igbo today is lack of trust. If we can rebuild the trust among ourselves, our people will be better for it.”

Sports - EPL VIDEO: Chelsea 3 – 0 Leicester City (DOWNLOAD)

Diego Costa and Eden Hazard both got on the scoresheet as Chelsea secured a 3-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.
Costa opened the scoring after just seven minutes as he tapped home from close range when found unmarked from a corner.
The Blues soon doubled their advantage as Hazard profited from some woeful defending from Leicester before slotting past Kasper Schmeichel.
And Victor Moses played a delightful one-two with Nathaniel Chalobah late on before finding the back of the net to wrap up the three points for Antonio Conte’s men.

NEWS - Groundbreaking of The Tower in Dubai, set to be the World's tallest in 2020

Dubai is again reaching for the sky with the groundbreaking of The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour, which is set to be the World's tallest in 2020.

Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid on Monday "broke ground" on the world’s tallest tower – a structure that will define Expo 2020 as the Eiffel Tower defined Paris for its 1889 World Fair.

"The new tower sets another challenge in the history of human architecture – a race the UAE deserves to lead," said Sheikh Mohammed, after the ceremony. We strive for new achievements. A new heart for our city and global landmark. Humankind has no ceiling or border but our imagination."
The Tower is described as the centrepiece of Dubai Creek Harbour, a commercial and cultural area being developed by Emaar Properties. It will have a hotel, rotating balconies and observation decks, with dynamic lighting.
The futuristic design, chosen by Sheikh Mohammed, was by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, whose works include the World Trade Centre Transport Hub in New York, the Calgary Peace Bridge and the Turning Torso Tower in Denmark.

The Tower’s design is inspired by the lily and evokes the image of a minaret. Its observation decks were modelled on an elongated, oval-shaped bud, with the rest of the structure its slender stem.
The Tower will be linked to the ground with sturdy cables that replicate the delicate ribbing of lily leaves anchoring the bud securely to the ground.
The design includes a Pinnacle Room with views of the city, and VIP Observation Garden Decks recreating the splendour of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Also at the event were Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai; Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed, Deputy Ruler of Dubai; Mohammed Al Gergawi, Chairman of Dubai Holding and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Future, and Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties.

The six-square-kilometre Dubai Creek Harbour development is near Ras Al Khor National Wildlife Sanctuary and a 10-minute drive from Dubai International Airport. When completed it will be twice the size of Downtown Dubai, Emaar said.

ENTERTAINMENT GIST - How KSA, Asa, 2Baba and Dbanj left their mark on the Atlantic

When the announcement was made months ago that King Sunny Ade (KSA), Asa, 2Baba and Dbanj would light up the stage of the Eko Atlantic on Independence Day this year, many would have thought it would be a low key affair, but from what we saw last night, it certainly wasn’t!

The Supremacy Concert, an initiative of the Main Group and the finale of the much talked about Made-in-Nigeria Festival attracted music fans from far and near. While it would not be the first time the Eko Atlantic has played host to a concert but the Supremacy Concert would surpass all.

The concert was opened by the amiable Sola Mogaji who introduced herself to the teeming crowd at the Atlantic and also went on to introduce the music superstars billed to perform.

First to lead the pack was the living legend who just clocked 70 years of age, King Sunny Ade popularly called KSA. The legendary musician who was seen in a Made-in-Nigeria bespoke Atiku outfit sent the crowd into nostalgia by bringing back his evergreen songs back to back. Many would have thought his septuagenarian age would hinder him from showing his electrifying dance steps but that was not the case as he danced gracefully to the delight of the crowd.

Innocent Idibia popularly called 2Baba was next to perform at the Atlantic. He performed in his native Akwa-Ibom outfit with dark shades. He went on to reel out his hit songs from Implication to for Instance and more, a move that left the crowd asking for more. 2Baba didn’t disappoint his fans as he also performed his new singleOfficially Blind which was chorused by the fans throughout the period he performed.

In between these performances, the legendary DJ, the one fans love to call cool DJ JimmyJatt was also on hand to deliver judgement on the wheel of steel at the concert. Fans of the pioneer DJ danced without holding back as they listened to the range of hits he mixed from his music box.

Next on was the Internationally Recognised Singer and Entertainer- Asa. Asa was seen wearing her trademark Nigerian fabric blouse while performing at the event. She literally blew away everybody, she performed hits from all her albums such as Bibanke, Akinyele, Mama mi, Satan be Gone, 360 and others. She also reminded everyone present how much of a good guitarist she is as she latched on to her guitar playing old songs much to the singing delight of all present there.

Asa then surprised everyone present when she attempted to praise the MaIN Founder, Prince Segun Oniru by singing the popular Fuji music even though she confessed her band who are white men could not replicate the Fuji beats for her, a move that sent the crowd into rapturous laughter.

The Koko Master Dbanj came on stage in dramatic fashion after his ‘Hype man’ Jimmie, engaged the crowd in wild chants to welcome the emergence of the Ejanla (big fish as Dbanj calls himself sometimes). Dbanj did not just perform for the audience, he entertained them too keeping them on the edge of their seats for most of the night, with several hits such as Suddenly, Emergency, Mr. Endowed and other hits.

NEWS - United Nations Secretary General Ban ki-moon sends a strong message to Nigerian Government

“Things have to start getting better and for things to get better, our voices must be heard. Today’s event is not about pointing accusing fingers; we are here for prospects and solutions only. How does the government create an enabling environment for the country to thrive? If the country is headed in the wrong direction, there are capable Nigerians that can lead the country back to the right track, the government owes it to the nation to get competent hands to run the economy.”
This was the opening statement made by Mr. Okenfe Liberty, the U.S Coordinator of the Nigerian Young Professionals Forum (NYPF). The NYPF, a Non-Governmental Organization composed of over 3 million young Nigerian professionals globally with chapters in fifteen different nations, held a summit that gathered from all over the world, a critical mass of these young Nigerians to New York on September 24th concurrently with the United Nations General Assembly UNGA, with the theme “X-raying the current Nigerian Economic Challenges, Foreign Policy, Prospects and Solutions”.  It is obvious that this group of young people meant business when they decided to orchestrate the gathering of their leaders for what they labelled as Real Dialogue.

This gathering was not in isolation; the United Nations got involved. Described as a moment of challenge and opportunity for the human family, the UN Secretary-General Ban ki-moon in his speech presented at the summit on his behalf by his special Envoy on Youth, Ahmad Alhendawi, the Secretary-General stated his confidence in Nigeria, that the nation as Africa’s largest economy and most populous country can show its continent and the world that it is possible to achieve sustainable development and leave no one behind.

He has urged the Nigerian government to take the primary responsibility in delivering the sustainable development agenda to its citizens and to get young people involved, engaged and equipped with the ambience to lead the charge in other for a sustainable society to be built, this he says is part of the global call for sustainability and partnership. This is the first time in history that the United Nations is getting involved at such capacity; certainly, the very first in the history of Nigeria that a UN Secretary-General is sending a strong message through a forum organized by young Nigerians.

Nigerian Leaders present at the summit to engage in the Nation’s solution discuss included Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State, Prof Pat Utomi an Economist and Founder/CEO at Centre for Values in Leadership (CVL), Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, Former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, amongst other leader attendees.

Nigeria has an estimated 37million micro and medium size enterprises (SMEs) which contributes to the GDP and employment.  This SME sector is the engine that drives the economy, a key ingredient that could carry the country through these who went on to suggest his ideas for the economic solutions, such as the tough times.
With the recession hitting hard, SMEs are aware consumers don’t have as much money to spend while investors and partners reduce investment.
“It is pivotal that the government show critical support for this sector if Nigeria is to relate effectively to the world”, said Mr ChimaAnyaso, the NYPF South East Regional Chair recovery of Nigeria’s over $100B abroad, lowering of interest rate to promote SMEs, whom he says are employers of 80% of the nation’s labor force, and promoting goods made in Nigeria.
“A lot of us Nigerian Young Professionals are boosting the other countries with our exceptionalism,” Mr. Moses Siasia the young 36-year old founder of the summit organization NYPF said in his remarks.  “I met a 27 year old Young Nigerian living in the UK , an aeronautic engineer, I have also met a 26 year old young man in the U.S, a robotic/robotic engineer.  Nigerians are exceptional abroad boosting the economy of different countries, but our own country lacks. Moving back to Nigeria is important and we cannot keep playing the blaming game. The NYPF is one of the platforms to bring the solutions  required, but imagine if every young Nigerian professional came together to contribute their own quota towards nation building, I believe that we will be a great Nation again. You must contribute your own quota,”  Mr. Siasia said, “and that is what we are advising young NIgerians around the world to do towards the development of the Nation.
These solutions discussed from this summit will be presented to the Nigerian President Buhari as a report,”  Mr. Siasia concluded.
Prof Pat Utomi, the international Economist, gave an almost thirty-minute lecture under the title Between The Demographic Dividend and Despair of an Oil Economy”. He highlighted that the youth bulge the nation is facing can be a threat or an opportunity depending on the sort of environment the nation presents this bulging population with; he says that the challenge the nation faces is that of how to harness the demographic dividend versus the oil mindset in the current crisis.
“Young people can make a huge difference in the fortune of any country,” he said.
His speech highlighted a crisis of confidence in Nigeria. Addressing the privatization of national asset, he says that national assets becoming private assets has led the country nowhere. His proposed solution to the economic crisis suggested that
“Nigeria must look at moving into areas where it has strong factor endowment in which we can become competitive along the global value chain.  Every part of Nigeria is endowed enough to become globally competitive,” stating that the production of Rubber as part of the agricultural sector is an example that should be considered.  “Nigeria used to have the best yield per hectare of Rubber in the world,” he said. Oil made us lazy, he emphasized. As part of his ideas, he also suggested for the Nation to create wealth that is diversified and takes from the challenge of oil debate, and to also manage solid minerals effectively so that the nation does not fall into the same problems they have encountered with oil.
The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Kingsley Moghaluanalyzed some key points on how the nation can arguably get out of recession. His prognosis is that in the second half of 2017, if the 2017 budget is effectively and efficiently developed and executed, an impact will be seen due to the money that will be pumped into the economy more in the first half of 2017.
“Very likely, even then the nation will not get more than 2% economic growth,” he said, also predicting that it is in 2018 and 2019 that the nation will see the results if the right things are done now. “The right things,” he stated, ”includes implementing a muscular fiscal and structural policy, changes in FOREX policy management and gaining economic confidence which comes by an effective monetary policy, which  will follow only after the fiscal and structural policy is fixed.”
With inflation being at 17%, this former CBN governor says that even if the CBN reduces the interest rate, the economic situation remains until there are structures in place citizens can begin to rely on. Central banks came out of recession through low interest rate, but only with good policies in place.

The CBN deputy governor emphasized that the number one responsibility of an economy is to create wealth and prosperity for its citizens.
“Poverty is the reason for discrimination,” he says. “America really wants you to visit, with your money, but when you are poor, some candidates will use you for campaign”, he joked.
“Having a world view will do Nigeria good,” he highlighted, stating that countries’ economies are driven by a world view; a sense of the future, of the value system that must undergird our society and everything we want to do.
“We want to be a major power in Africa and our demographic advantage can take us there, but we would need to have a strategy that is deliberate and a plan for the future. This plan cannot include short term plans like selling of national assets to get out of the recession. The sale of national asset cannot be done as a shortcut measure to get out of recession; it will be done badly, he emphasized.
The former deputy shared a ton of idea solutions that he assured is the way out of the current troubled state, from quality spending by every naira spent contributing to an increase in the GDP per capita to expanding internal revenue base for an inclusive growth and Laissez-faire economy; the deputy held nothing back.

One of the youngest Governors in Nigeria, Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger, was given a NYPF award for his outstanding economic agenda for Niger State, presented by the UN Envoy on Youth, Mr. Alhendawi.

The Envoy who had just returned from a visit to Nigeria said that the Nigerian young minds are thirsty to be heard and that investing in the right policies will lead to transformation.  He also announced the UN global campaign Not Too Young To Run, stating that more young people need to be in leadership positions,. This campaign, he says, encourages government to think of their youth and not only to work for them, but with them as the only way forward.
“If young people are in entertainment and Arts, then why can't they run for office in politics so they can be at the table and heard? The largest interaction the UN has in the world, according to their database, are with Nigerians,” he says, adding that working with young people is the big public secret to transformation and we all know it.
Many young attendees, when interviewed about what they thought of this gathering and about the future of the Nation, said the NYPF platform is great to come up with solutions and stated that the timeliness of this event couldn't be more appropriate.  Several stated that they felt empowered and on board to work with the Nigerian government and the private sector (Public Private Partnerships) to seek out innovative solutions in their own diverse skills.

NEWS - FG's lawyer absent at Nnamdi Kanu's ECOWAS COURT hearing,as case is adjourned till November 8th

It was a nervous moment for the Nigerian government toady at the Community Court Of Justice,  ECOWAS (Economic Community Of West African States) Abuja,  as the Court ignored every threat from the Nigerian government to conduct a hearing on Nnamdi Kanu's (the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB)  case which has suffered an unending trial at the Nigerian judiciary.

Nnamdi Kanu's defence team led by Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor arrived the court at exactly 10:00am while the three man panel of judges led by Justice Friday Nwoke from the ECOWAS Community Court Of Justice arrived at about 10:10am. Barrister Ejiofor introduced himself to the judges after which the court clerk called up the case.

The Nigerian government was found to be on the run as the defence lawyer to the federal government submitted a motion for his absence just few hours before court proceedings,  claiming that he has a case today in Kaduna.

Barr Ejiofor objected to this pointing out that he met him just yesterday at the court, while he accused the Nigerian government of plans to further prolong Kanu's case.

Reacting to this, the presiding judge, Justice Nwoke, pointed out that the court case in Kaduna is not enough reason for their absence in today's court, stressing that if the federal government's representative fails to appear in the next court session, he (Justice Nwoke)  will go ahead to give final judgment in the case between Nnamdi Kanu and the federal government of Nigeria.

He also billed the Nigerian government to compensate Barr Ejiofor with the sum of one million naira only as compensation for flying from Lagos to Abuja for the case and failure to show up.

Justice Nwoke thereafter adjourned the case to 8th November 2016 for hearing and final judgment.

VIEWPOINTS - Pope Francis welcomes gays, transsexuals to Catholic church

– Pope Francis has urged the Catholic Church to welcome and embrace homosexual and transsexual people – “When a person arrives before Jesus, Jesus certainly will not say, ‘Go away because you are homosexual’,” the pope said Pope Francis has recently called for transsexual and homosexual people to be accepted and respected by the Catholic Church. However, he stressed that he doesn’t support schools teaching youngsters sex changes and described gender theory as part of a “global war” against marriage.

The Pope made the remarks aboard his papal plane while returning to Rome from a three-day visit to Georgia and Azerbaijan. He said: “When a person arrives before Jesus, Jesus certainly will not say, ‘Go away because you are homosexual’. Each case must be welcomed, accompanied, studied, discerned and integrated. This is what Jesus would do today.” He also recounted a story of a woman from Spain who had a sex change to become a man and subsequently married a woman.

The couple were invited to the Vatican after the transgender man wrote the Pope a letter, where he told about his transition and hateful attitude of a local priest. The Pope said: “Life is life, and things should be taken as they come. Sin is sin, but tendencies or hormonal imbalances … can cause many problems and we have to be careful.

But each case must be welcomed, accompanied, studied, discerned and integrated.  When a person (who is gay) arrives before Jesus, Jesus certainly will not say, ‘Go away because you are homosexual.'”  He then joked with the reporters:

“Please don’t write that the Pope will bless transsexuals. I can see the front pages of newspapers now.” He also reiteriated his position on gender theory when speaking with bishops in Poland last week: “What I was talking about was the nastiness that is present today in indoctrinating people in gender theory,” he said. “It is one thing for a person to have this tendency, this option, and even change sex,” he said. “But it is another thing to teach it, gender theory, in schools along these lines in order to change mentality. I call this ideological colonisation.”
